In 2021, Cricket Week returned following the Covid-19 pandemic. Player numbers were lower than usual as a result, so only two teams took part. Nonetheless, some great times were had, offering a much needed break from reality for some outdoor socialising!
Many personal bests were recorded, keeping the spirit of Cricket Week alive and well.

Cricket Week 2019 welcomed back captain Bridget, welcomed new captain Laura Hill, and also welcomed a new group of ladies from Hellingly in Sussex. They had heard about Cricket Week from 1993 World Cup Winner Wendy Watson, and thought they might be spending the whole week on the sidelines – little did they know!
The fancy dress efforts were again fantastic, the highlight being the fourth oar of the Viking longboat playing a late cut when the previous three oars had missed! Many personal bests were recorded, and a great week was had by all.

The biggest highlight of CW 2018 was the barn dance held for Mazza’s 70th and Rabbit’s 21st birthdays! The fancy dress theme was the 1940s in honour of the decade Maz was born, and the standard was very high!
In cricketing terms, the week began and ended with teams playing pairs cricket, and there were some quite good performances in between. There was a maiden century for Emma Waters, and a possible fastest hundred in her life for Coral Handley. Emma Chandler took a wicket with the first ball she’d ever bowled in her life, and Caff hit her first ever “proper” six. Clarkie’s team won the 15/15, and the Cricket Week X1 lost to Colwall CC.

We had slightly soggy Cricket Week in 2017, although some cricket was played every day. In a week slightly short on numbers, teams played with 10 or 11 players each day. The 15/15 was lost to the weather, but the end of the week was much better, and much fun was had by all with the pantomime fancy dress theme. It’s not very often you will see the back end of a horse bowling to Cinderella and Dick Whittington, while Captain Hook patrols the covers with a plank “long barrier”!

Ex-England X1 vs CanAm United and spectators – Photo by Claire Jenkins
Cricket Week 2016 had a visiting squad from the CanAm United cricket team. The week began on the Sunday as usual, with an England Veterans XI taking on the visitors. The match was played in excellent spirits, with the home team winning by 22 runs. In a 40 over match the England XI scored 184 (Clarkie 72), while CanAm scored 162 all out after 38 overs.
It was a mostly dry week, with only some overnight rain to trouble the campers. The 15/15 produced some tight games as usual, with the trophy won by Bridget’s team. In a change to the usual Wednesday evening schedule, a combined Colwall CC & Cricket Week X1 took on a CanAm team instead of the usual match against Colwall CC. In a tight game, the Cricket Week XI triumphed by a narrow margin. The Captain’s Golf Day, also Wednesday, was won by Clarkie.
Friday’s Fancy Dress Theme – Musicals – produced some excellent efforts in creativity that were also just about conducive to playing cricket!

Cricket Week 2014 began with a Margaret Campbell Memorial match, with a team of Cricket Week regulars past and present taking on an invitational X1 from Margaret’s playing days. The match was close, with the “home” CW team winning by 13 runs. It was a mostly dry week, with only Tuesday being washed out. The 15/15 produced its first ever tied final, with the trophy shared between Culver and Smith. Colwall CC won the men’s match, and Friday’s Fancy Dress Theme led to the Heroes vs Villains match, and alas, evil triumphed. No contrived pantomime happy endings here!

As 2012 was an Olympic year, one enterprising Cricket Weeker came up with having a “Cultural Colwalliad” and running a poetry competition. The following four selected entries of note were read out by their authors at the last night.
ODE TO CRICKET WEEK – Clarkie
Fortunate indeed we are,
We come by plane and train and car
To drink the beer and tea and wine
To hope for weather, clear and fine.
Put up the stumps upon the wicket-
This week is set aside for cricket.
In time the aches and pains will fade
Memories only of runs made,
Wickets taken, catches caught,
(The brain blocks out all scores of nought)
That 3, a 4, and then another
A well-judged drive through extra cover.
The perfect yorker, swing and seam
Today you’re bowling like a dream,
Name on the highlights board for sure
The oppo won’t get near this score.
But then the rain begins to fall
And it’s “man the covers” one and all.
The weather wins, the cricket ends
So many years, so many friends
From London, Cheshire, Wales and Devon
Since 1926, or 7,
Must carry on this winning streak, so
Get all your friends to Cricket Week!
The ghost pitch at Colwall CC, home of Cricket Week
HOMAGE TO CRICKET WEEK – Viv Clark
The time has arrived a year and a week later to gather under the flag of the WCA in the majestic shadow of the Malverns.
The ways to the hallowed pitches, old and new are varied, some by sea, most by road through valleys, fens and mountain passes.
Who will we see, friends of old, friends to come, friends lost in time, all heading to the “cradle” of women’s cricket.
Mostly friendly games with coaching advice, but all forgotten come 15/15.
The men play hard to beat the girls, but over time all is square.
We come from far and wide all sizes, ages and beliefs, united by willow and white, on green, under blue.
RANDOM BOLLOCKS – Joanne Beasley Fancy dressage. Photo by Joanne Beasley
We all have a goal
We’ll all have our Gold
We dream our dreams
And in our hearts we hold
Highest fastest strongest
First over the line
That feeling of doing our best
The joy and the pride; sublime
Team GB chants
Ringing in our ears
The glory and the pride
They carried our hopes and fears
From them we take Inspiration
We feed from their glory
Can we ourselves make
Our own success story
The Malvern Hills beckon us
The road to Colwall bends
Through the leafy lanes they bring us
To our wonderful smiling friends
The whites we don
Our positions we take
Can this be the Day
A PB we make
The bowler storms in
We all take our stance
The batsman makes contact
Through the outfield we dance
The stumps then go flying
We all shout with glee
Mainly, to be honest,
‘Cos the ball’s not coming to me
The next batsman skies it!
A total mishit
Some relish to catch it
The rest think, “Oh shit!”
Then time that I dread
I hear the death knell toll
The captain looks at me
And asks me to bowl
I concentrate on the stumps
I think ‘Darren Gough’
I run in with purpose
And bowl at mid-off
I think of team GB
From their seeds I will sow
I run in with Gusto
And bowl at my toe
The captain takes pity
Sends me off with a clap
She really should listen
When I tell her I’m crap!
It’s time for us to bat
An excited, frenzied state
Slightly modified when
Captain tells me I’m EIGHT
Finally it happens
Number seven gets a nick
It’s now my time
And suddenly I feel sick
If it wasn’t for my helmet
I’d surely be dead
It’s not the fierce bowling
I just manage to bat my own head
Cricket Week – relaxed cricket since 1927. Photo by Chloe Jackson
We all have our goal
We aim and we strive
For me in this innings
I just want to survive
We all have our goal
Higher, stronger faster we run
But it’s really about
Just having some fun
Whatever our goal
Whatever we seek
Let’s all just enjoy
The time that is ‘Cricket Week’
UNTITLED – Anne Monaghan
As I spied those Malvern Hills of old
I remembered all those times ‘twas bowled
Beneath the spreading cedar tree
My merry cricket chums and me
And as the merry years roll by
I sit beneath the tree and sigh
Recalling teams in their cricket skirt
And all my body parts that hurt
Taff and Patsy, Jackie, Enid too
International, English and other crew
Who can keep the spirit alive?
Hurrah the Pershore team arrive
Driving like the Italian job
To join the tented village mob
We’ll spread the word of cricket week
To return for many years we seek
Sofa surfing! Photo by Bridget Culver
A rather wet Cricket Week in a very wet summer. Sofa surfing made a welcome return, the men’s match was a washout and the week ended with a zumba session in the local sports hall to keep the players entertained! Despite the rain, Clarkie’s team regained the 15/15 trophy, and the Olympic fancy dress competition meant some great photos for everyone!
